Bowls New Zealand was formed in 1996 when the New Zealand Bowls Association and the New Zealand Women's Bowls Association amalgated to create just one national body to govern the sport of bowls in New Zealand.

Since then the sport has been taken to new heights with the introduction of various schemes such as the OneBowls plan.  Increasingly younger people are getting into the sport and participation levels bowls are on the rise, more on a casual playing basis than full membership however.

At the last count in April 2006, an estimated 90, 000 New Zealanders play bowls either casually or more seriously, and through new plans and operations, Bowls New Zealand is hoping this will increase.

The national office is based in Penrose, Auckland, but staff are placed throughout New Zealand, including five Community Development Officers who aim to promote the sport within their region.
