Young Talent to Represent NZ at Merdeka
Event Name: 5th Asia Pacific Merdeka Indoor Bowls Championships
Event Dates: 20 - 26 November 2010
Event Location: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
New Zealand’s upcoming young talent will be set to take on some of the World’s best at the 5th Asia Pacific Merdeka Indoor Bowls Championships later this year. This event is one of the most prestigious and competitive international invitational events, where the world’s top players compete for top honours. The New Zealand selectors have taken the proactive initiative of sending a youthful, yet competent side to the event. The two athletes are Mandy Boyd and Matt Gallop.
Off the back of a glittering 2009-2010 playing season including; skipping the U25 Trans Tasman women’s triples and fours sides to a historic win over Australia, winning the National Secondary Schools singles title and having been selected for the Commonwealth Games long list, Wellington’s Mandy Boyd will take to the greens in Malaysia.
Mandy is joined by Sydney based Matt Gallop, who will seek to stamp a mark on the international field. Matt took on Australia in the singles at the U25 Trans Tasman test series earlier this year.
Following the singles events, Mandy and Matt will play together in the mixed pairs championship.
Last year, New Zealand’s representatives were the singles winners of the NZCT National Club Championships Singles Darren Redway (Rangiora) and Feona Sayles (Palmerston North). Feona, placed third equal overall, in a fierce field of competitors.
